A massive distribution center is coming to southern Dallas.
The Dallas City Council voted Wednesday in favor of giving more than $6 million in incentives for The Home Depot (NYSE: HD), which plans to open a multimillion-square-foot center in southern Dallas that will bring about 800 jobs to the area. The proposal passed with an 11-3 vote.
Mayor Pro Tem Casey Thomas, who represents District 3, where the center will be, said in a tweet the project will be Home Depot’s largest distribution center in the country.
“This is an opportunity that will be beneficial to many of the residents of the city of Dallas. We are excited about this opportunity,” Thomas said. “We are going to have a very active hiring process. We’re going to work with them on training and make sure that so many people who have not had opportunities have the skills necessary to move out of poverty and be able to break a generational curse. We’re talking over 800 jobs.”
Scott Griggs, one of three council members to oppose the project, said he took issue with the fact that only 25 percent of the jobs are committed to Dallas residents. He said that number should be more like 35 percent.
“I think we need to attract jobs here for Dallas residents with our generous tax abatements, and 35 percent is not too much to ask someone who is getting a generous tax abatement from the city of Dallas,” Griggs said.
Home Depot will be getting almost $5.3 million in tax abatements from the city over a 10-year period.
The center, a build-to-suit project, will be located at 9314 West Jefferson Blvd.
The Dallas City Council also approved more than $1 million in incentives for a new facility that HS Supply Facilities Maintenance Ltd. is opening in southwest Dallas. The proposal passed with a 10-4 vote.
HD Supply’s distribution center will be built on 82 acres in between Interstate Highway 20 and Camp Wisdom Road.
